Priorities for Vermont

A 21st Century Justice System
Criminal justice reform entails challenging old assumptions, embracing data driven solutions, and working toward a system that is fair to offenders, respectful to victims, and consistent with our values.
  • Implement accountability mechanisms and processes that build public confidence in law enforcement.
  • Expand adult and family drug treatment court access throughout the State, and integrate mental health resources in policing.
  • Build capacity and consistency among Vermont's network of community justice and court diversion programs.
  • De-felonize personal use amounts of regulated drugs and fully implement the recommendations of the Council on State Government report on racial disparities in sentencing.
Defending Democracy & Fundamental Rights
We cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to voting rights, reproductive rights, or the right to be ourselves and to choose who we love.  As Attorney General, I will lead the way and zealously defend these rights for all Vermonters.
  • Fully support and protect Vermont's municipal, state, and election workers in their critical work.
  • Protect reproductive rights for Vermonters and those relying on Vermont to exercise their choice.
  • Enforce Vermont's anti-corruption and ethics laws, and build effective oversight to ensure we never face another EB-5 scandal.
  • Build confidence in Vermont's public records system and ensure a transparent government.
Advocating for the Environment
We must grow Vermont in a sustainable manner and be willing to enforce our environmental standards.  Vermonters deserve clean air, clean water, and must be bold on climate action - in court and at home.
  • Ensure Vermont's environmental justice laws and polices have teeth - and full force of the legal process behind them.
  • Support Vermont's climate and greenhouse gas emission goals.

Protecting Vermonters
The Attorney General's most critical role is leading on public safety.  We must be pro-active in confronting threats and committed to standing up for our most vulnerable - from scams to violent crime.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to combat the opiate epidemic - from treatment and harm reduction to a coordinated effort to counter the violent crime accompanying drug trafficking.
  • Prioritize victims' voices throughout the justice process - restorative justice cannot succeed without the support and confidence of victims.
  • Improve systems responses to hate motivated crimes, exploitation and scamming of vulnerable populations, and support the state's Veteran population.
  • Promote a culture of pro-active responses to public safety challenges.
